A Beautiful Robot

Posted on 8th June 2008 by Mat

I was watching the gadget show this morning, and saw this section on a robot jelly fish that a company called Festo had made. They swim around on their own, know when to charge themselves, and know not to bump into each other when there’s more than one.

Aqua Jelly

That was impressive enough, but then they showed the Air Jelly, which is essentially the same thing but filled with helium to make it nearly weightless, and it flies. What’s incredible is that it’s a robot but it moves so gracefully, and looked pretty beautiful floating around the room. I thought you might like to see it…

Ooo I wonder if you can get inside and float around. I want one.

  • Susie

I found that kind of creepy. It reminded me off Dr. Octavius.

  • Carolyn

    Isn’t it Dr Octapus?

  • Susie

    Maybe. I’m ususally wrong.

  • Pete

Its kind of both I belive. He is called Dr Octavius when he is a real, normal doctor (not a medical one). When he gets attatched the the machine that menas he has 8 limb the papers call him Dr.Octapus-a very clever tabloid pun. I think that is correct, but I could be wrong.

  • Jonny Evans

    right you are Pete

  • carolyn

In that case I beleive I am right as Susie is reffering to the octapus like motion of the robots.

  • Andy

However - the name Dr Octapus was just a nickname given to him… his name was always Octavious (or Octavius depending on how much you know about Spiderman or can be bothered to read on Wikipedia). So I believe both of you are correct as is Pete as is Jonny. And so am I. Ha ha.

  • Susie

Good point. Going to get his name officially changed probably wasn’t top of his list when he got all those legs.

  • Jonny Evans

He was probably just so relieved that even though he was killing people, everyone still called him by the title “Dr”. He worked five years or so for that, so it’d be a shame to lose it.

Those robots thingys are kind of cool, but you’ve got to ask, “Why?” Who has enough time and/or money to sit around inventing stuff like that? And why aren’t they putting it to better use?

We’ve just recently started watching The Gadget Show (due to the dearth of TV entertainment on a Monday night) and get completely suckered by the competition almost every week but we’ve entered 3 times now and still haven’t won. I think it’s a fix.

    Ey up Andy

(someone said that to me today - substitute the “Andy for “Jonny”. I laughed. I laughed in his face for quite a while. It got a little embarrassing. Embarrassing for him anyway).

Are you in work today? Will you be able to access your emails if I send you one?
