Well you know I don’t like you but you wanna be my friend

So, since things seem to have gone a little quiet over the past couple of days and I’m on annual leave while everyone I know is at work I thought I would ask if anyone else has the new Counting Crows album yet.

And do you like it?

I think I do but I get the impression that they’re kind of running out of lyrics and have therefore been forced to recycle some. I feel that Adam Duritz is maybe a man who just doesn’t know how to get the heck over it. But I still love him.

So, I would be interested to hear what you all think. Or if you haven’t got it - what are you mostly listening to this week?

I don’t think we own the new Crows album yet although Andy may have downloaded it earlier this week after discovering that that’s the cheapest way to get it! Although if you do that, you don’t have an actual CD to add to the collection. I’m quite intrigued to hear it, having read your review, Kate.

In the absence of the Crows album I’m mostly listening to…nothing at all! My car stereo, which was stolen in November, is yet to be replaced and I have now become rather accustomed to driving around in silence. I was excited about the new REM stuff though so maybe when I have some time I’ll “listen again” to the thing that was on Radio 2 on monday night, and the Live Lounge stuff they did for Jo Wiley yesterday. Apparently they covered an Editors track so there’s a good chance that they improved on the original.

I just wrote a very full and thorough responce to this post but it’s disappeared and I can’t be bothered to write it all again.

I haven’t heard the new Crows album yet but am quite excited about it. I’m also quite excited about the new REM stuff. It had better be good!

Kate I was just coming on the blog to announce the arrival just now of Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings! Its still on the first track, which I’d heard already on their website, so can’t give thoughts yet….but I’m very excited!

I’ve got it and I do like it, but I agree with your points. Some of the songs sound like they’re going over old ground (I think some of them are old songs, but I could be making that up), and the end of Los Angeles is cheese on a stick.

I think I prefer the Rockier half of it, and there’s a bonus track called Sunday Morning LA that starts off slow and then kicks in with a great riff, that I think is my favourite at the moment. Cowboys, 1492, Insignificant are all great too. I’ve only listened to it all the way through once though, so I’m dedicating some time to it this weekend so I can get used to the later songs on it.

It bodes well for the live shows too that they’ve got some new rocking rock songs!

Andy - Can you reset my password to log in please? I think someone may have hacked it or something cos I can’t get it to work, and I’ve tried everything that I think it would be.

I’ve not got it, cos I’m not really a counting crows fan (shock gasps echo throughout the blog).

I’ve been listening to some of my older albums which I’ve not heard for a bit. ‘Elevator’ by Hot Hot Heat is a wonderful bit of fun for the morning journey to work, whilst Dave Crowder Band’s “A collision” is splendid. Not heard it for a while, but that has been my journey home album this week.

I agree about the whole recycling thing. But I’m happy for them to recycle when it was so good in the first place. I’ve listened once and like it. I’m looking forward to getting to know it more. Adam does need to get over it though. I’ve been listening to Ash a lot lately. Is that allowed? I’m just going through one of those phases where I want to be a teenager again and Ash help with that!

  7. Jonny Evans says:

    Ash?

    Ash!!

Susie Hoyland - I’m not sure we can be friends anymore!

Ash are my musical nemesis… Carolyn and I won tickets to see Hot Hot Heat support Ash at the apollo a few years ago. Everyone left after Hot Hot Heat finished - and I mean EVERYONE! The bouncer tried to stop us, he said “It’s not over yet, Ash are still to play”.

    It didn’t stop anyone leaving.

I thought that might be controversial. I went to see them live when i was 15. I don’t really remember it but I’m pretty sure I enjoyed myself. I think I just went because all my friends went. But now they remind me of that time and I like listening to them. Also, I went to see Scouting For Girls the other day. Is that allowed? I got given a ticket for my birthday to go with some friends. I hadn’t heard of them til a few weeks ago but they were really good. They were clearly just having a laugh.

Josh Ritter. He’s good. Ros went to see him this week and has just introduced me to his stuff (I don’t know how I haven’t heard of him before. Its exactly the kind of music I like and he’s been around for years). Its great and you can listen on his website to the whole album.

I don’t like Crows either so I don’t have the album.

On a different note - I just got an error message while opening Vista:

The problem was caused by Windows Vista, which was created by Microsoft Corporation. You are running Windows Vista, which is no longer supported by Microsoft Corporation

I guess I should have bought a mac.

  10. Andy says:

Ok ok ok… I lied a bit in that last comment. We have the album. I got it off iTunes. It came with a video interview with Adam Duritz where he talks about each song. Has anyone ever seen Purpose Driven Life videos by Rick Warren? Well - Adam’s interviews come across a little bit like those.

I haven’t watched them all yet - but I think he talks about the fact that a lot of the songs are revisiting themes from earlier songs… he’s probably basically saying that he really should just get over it - but, like he says in Insignificant “I don’t how to see the same things different now”… he’s still seeing a lot of the same stuff as he did before and just cos he’s however many years older, he doesn’t see things any different now.

    I like the album.

  11. Ros says:

I might get the album. Josh Ritter was really good, I’m a fan. But this week I have also been listening to Kylies greatest hits. Timeless classics.

  12. Gloria says:

I haven’t heard the new Crows album yet. I’m actually more excited about the new REM stuff. OK, not more excited. As excited.

Susie - I really like Scouting for Girls. Would have bought the album by now if it weren’t for the fact that I can’t spend money on stuff I don’t need any more, what with having a baby soon and all. So if anyone wants to buy it for me…! I also like The Plain White Ts.

I think I might be a closet teenager.

There’s a good article about Adam (and the band) in Rolling Stone too. You can read it here…
