Oh what a long title

Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream. I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been
For those of you who didn’t recognize the title of the post-shame on you. Is is the opening 2 lines form the song Kashmir by Led Zep. The version of it on the CDI just bought(No Quarter-Page and Plant) is fantasic, with lots of indian theamed stuff.
And it is kind of relevant to the point of my post-or at least the word ‘traveler’ is. I have a dilemma…
In 5th year we go on an elective, but I need to start planning it now. I have not really traveled before, so can’t wait to go! Here is my debate-I would love to go to Asia or India, the culture fascinates me and there are some amazingly beautifull places around. However, while on elective my ideal job would be community based medicine rather than hospital medicine. The kind of thing where you drive up to a village in a land rover and set up clinics on the street. The dilemma is that I am more likely to be able to do that kind of a thing in Africa, and in fact I already have half a plan put together of how I could do it in Uganda with a contact one of my house mates has. But I would still like to do India/asia….not that I would object to africa, that would be great as well…decisions…any advice? Also, the contact in Uganda is at a Christiam Medical Fellowship run hospital (CMF). It might be good to be around other Christians as I am sure there will be testing times when I am away-and as I will definitively not be at camp that year it might be kind of the same…
And now for a bit more of the song…
‘When Im on, when Im on my way, yeah
When I see, when I see the way, you say-yeah’

I told you on Facebook Asia..but now I read more I see your dilema. I think I would go for Africa as personally, if I were a doctor, the whole rocking up to a village in a truck would really appeal! They are both great places that you should try and go to at some point (I’m not saying that from experience by the way, but I think its good to o as many continants as you can in life!) sp perhaps you could keep Asia next at the top of the list. However, that’s just if it was me I think. Really both are gonna be awesome so its quite a nice decision to have to make!!! Also, I love how you liken a CMF hospital in Unganda to camp! Kinda the same.
Kate - I have booked mine and Ros’s Hyde Park Crows tickets!! Maybe we’ll see you there. Although probably not with the size! Did you just get the general admission tickets? The’re not numbered are they…I think we’re gonna have to get there really early and queue for a good spot. Its exciting. I love Ben Harper. He’s mint. I’d pay just to go see him so now I get both! I get Ben Harper, Crows and Jack Johnson all in one week!!

Pete - I’ve just got back from a fantastic week at a place called African Adventure. The team there are all really linked with Africa in one way or another - I am sure they would love to hear from you if you wanted to contact someone about a place to go in Africa. They were saying how they always need elective type people…
African Adventure was brilliant. I think I said to my dad - it was the closest you could get to perfect without family (including all you guys!) being present. I think it’s what work should be like…

Genious.
I think I am talking myself into Africa. But today has been the first time I have properly thought about going there rather than Asia, so I will give it some time chew over.

This won’t be a helpful comment at all but my brother and his wife did their elective in Peru and loved it. They had time to travel and see stuff as well as do the work bit, so maybe it’d be worth considering that too. I mean, if you’re gonna be away from England for a while, you might as well make it somewhere where you can get a lot out of the trip. Not that that rules out Africa, of course.

They did eat guinea pig though.
Susie - we will look out for you - can you maybe wear a big hat or something??! I’m quite excited that GooGoo Dolls are playing too. And I’m taking Ne to see Jimmy Carr the night before - a good weekend I think!
Pete - have you considered Plymouth, or is that a bit too primitive for you?

You won’t miss out on Hawaii or California - it’s safe to go, because Pete will be there and he’s a doctor.

Actually, I think this is probably a good time to tell you all that I have given up med school. Dont get me wrong, I do enjoy it. But I feel that its not my calling. I feel called towards somthing more artistic, to ballet. I start ballet classes on thursday, and will be performing in swan lake at the end of the term.
