The Amazon Stretch and Sweepstake

Posted on 30th April 2008 by Kate

So, I thought it was about time we actually started this sweepstake since Gloria is apparently getting bigger by the day - she’ll have to have a home birth cos she won’t fit through the door…

(I would like to point out that I haven’t actually seen Gloria recently and I’m sure that she is not huge but has a beautiful bump and I really hope that her crazy pregnancy hormones don’t cause her to take offence at that comment…)

Anyway, so the sweepstake is on the weight of the baby but in case any two people are equally close please also predict a time of birth. This will be used in the case of a tie.

There will be an £5 Amazon voucher for the winner. I think that’s fitting.

You may post a guess in either pounds and ounces or kilos and I will be going on the official weight as stated by the midwife. (Babies are weighed in kilos and then the weight converted so the lbs figure isn’t always bang on.)

And I’d just like to add that I attended the most fabulous home water birth this week - sometimes my job is just terrific.

And since it’s my sweep I’m having first guess:
    8lb 5oz at 5:42am.

  • Gloria

I’d better stick with 8lb 12oz, but s/he’s going to be a sociable baby so time of birth will be 4:37pm.

  • Gloria

By the way, I like your gravatar!

  • Ros

I’ll go with 8lb 9oz, at 5:25pm. Just in time for Neighbours.

  • Kathye

    7lb 10oz for me and 7.15am

  • Andy

Thanks for this Kate. And thanks for the offer of a prize! I’m excited about having a competition on my blog… I’d like to contribute so let’s make it £10 Amazon voucher and I’ll chip in the other £5. That is, of course, assuming you were actually offering your money for the prize and not mine!

    Anyway - I go for 23lb 38oz and born at 00:00…

  • Susie

    I go for 8lb 2oz and born at 3.07am

  • Mat

    Woohoo! I can login again!

    I’m going for 8lb 7oz, and 7:27pm

I wonder if my gravatar has worked…

  • Gloria

I just felt the need to share that, as of now, I am no longer in gainful employment!
For the next x number of weeks, I will be joining the great unemployed!
And after that, I’ll be joining the even-greater mums of the world.
    CAN’T WAIT!!!

  • Andy

Mat - when couldn’t you log in? Also - were you logged in when you posted that comment? For some reason it needed approving…

  • Kate

Andy, if you’re not going to play properly you can’t play at all. Please have a sensible guess.
I was planning to fund the prize myself so thanks very much for your contribution - I’m sure that’ll hot up the competition.

I like the idea of gravatars but I find it confusing when people don’t have one - I keep thinking the same person is posting when they’re not. I’m a simple soul.

  • Andy

I kind of assumed I wouldn’t be allowed to join in on account of the fact I can quite easily edit everyone’s comments.

I know you’d all like to think you can trust me but to be honest you can’t. Or maybe you can. No, you can’t. Or maybe you can. Now you’ll never know.

I agree about the Avatars. I’d like to know why Mat’s isn’t working. And I will still set anyone up with a gravyatehersoul if they want.

  • Susie

Please can i have one? You can choose a picture. Wait, did I really say that? Can it be a picture of someone really pretty please. If we all put in £5 it’d be like gambling. Well, it would be gambling.

  • Kate

We’re not all going to put in £5, just Andy and me - that way it’s a competition not gambling and Jesus won’t mind.

  • Susie

    Sorry.

  • Ros

I want a picture too please.

  • Mat

Yeah, it didn’t work. I managed to remember my password (or change it, I can’t remember, so I could log in on my lunch at work), and then I changed my email address so my gravatar would work. However, I wasn’t sure if I was logged in because it was fine on the homepage, but then had the log in thing showing when I looked at a topic. I don’t think it worked.

    Does it work now?

  • Susie

Andy, that email you said they’d send me asked for a password. Which I’m guessing you set up. I still don’t like Graviator.

  • Andy

Forward me the email and I’ll sort it.

Katie - forward me the email you get asking for confirmation too.

Mat - I’ve just cleared my cache and yours works now.

  • Pete

Hummm…hello…ive not been on here for a while! Sorry about that, it is because I am currently based on placement in grimsby which hasn’t got the internet yet-they only gave us a mains electricity supply last week!

Ive been very busy since I last spoke, got lots to tell you about…but I am not sure where to start…so perhaps I won’t.

  • Andy

Welcome back Pete. You seem to have missed a lot but not many actual posts. I might post something soon. If someone else doesn’t do it first. Have you entered the sweep 8oz steak yet?

  • Mum

Thought you’d all like to know the baby knitting is coming on fine and may even be ready for Amazon’s 8lb 11oz 8.11p.m. arrival.

  • Jonny Evans

You’re knitting a baby? Wow - that seems a more efficient and less painful way of bringing children into the world. I’m going for a 9lb baby.

  • Pete

Andy, I like the sound of an 8oz steak! I like it medium cooked, served with chips and salard, and covered in peppercorn source please.

  • Carolyn

Does anyone know a good place to search for a new job? I want one - I’ve got job rage. Also do you know any good websites (apart from this one of course) that aren’t facebook, games or myspace that I can read at work?

  • Jonny Evans

Why does Pete want to eat Andy and Gloria’s baby?

  • Pete

    Why not?

  • Andy

To support my reply to Pete’s comment I just typed “Is it illegal to eat babies?” into Google. I’m not sure why. It wasn’t a very helpful search. Maybe I’ll ask 118.

  • Jonny Evans

Heya Andy - did you get my email the other day?

  • Gloria

Carolyn, it’s not very much fun but I used to read the BBC website at lunchtimes (now, of course, I can just watch tv…!) but that’s what you get for working for the council that filters absolutely everything. Sometimes there’s some slightly quirky stuff on the magazine (always think that should be spelt with an s in English) pages.

Sorry to hear you are not having a good time at work at the moment. It probably won’t help for me to mention that I love not working, would it?!

Mum, it’s good that the knitting is going well. At least Amazon will have a blanket when s/he is born. At the moment, that’s about all s/he’ll have! I’m getting pretty sick of people asking if we’re ready yet because I’m totally chilled about it and not in any particular rush to have everything ready, but it makes me feel a) inadequate and b) inefficient when people give me that look that they do when I say we’ve got ages yet. Someone on Sunday actually said “I won’t tell you that my daughter was born 7 weeks early”. I resisted the temptation to say “You just did” but couldn’t hold back the “Don’t worry, I’ve heard it all before” that slipped out. I laughed as I said it so hopefully it didn’t sound too rude.

This is a very long post so I’m going to stop now. I probably should be doing something productive anyway. Any ideas, anyone…?

  • Kate

    Knit or summat!
So long as you’ve got a nappy and some Lansinoh you’ll be fine!!

  • Pete

i have just spent the last 2 hrs sitting in the sun with my housemates…I really should be working…we agreed that we would all go and work for an hour now! However, as I am typing on the blog, obviously i am not! I will be on a train for 2.5hrs this evening (just to go from Hull to Grimsby, its 45mins in the car!!!) so I will get stuff done then.

Relaxing in the sun is productive tho,

  • Susie

Gloria, now that you’re on maternity leave read Total Church. I like your quote Pete. Here’s one from Fat Face….”no one ever said on their deathbed, I wish I’d spent more time in the office”.

  • Andy

I really want to read Total Church. Someone buy it for me please. Amazon (the online store, not the baby) have stopped giving me free stuff and so I need to rely on someone else for it. Thanks. It’s only £7 or so from Amazon marketplace.

Susie - I figured out why your avatar wasn’t working and you will be getting another confirmation email through. Sorry - forward it to me and it will all be ok! I didn’t realise you were using sushi on the blog - I thought you were using susie now.

  • Susie

    So did I!

  • Mum

Pete I love your quote too. Think I’ll put it on my notice board at work. That is when I go back to work. I’m on holiday at the moment and the sun is shining and life is good! (Sorry all those of you at work)

  • Andy

    7lb 12oz… That’s my proper guess.

    Time - 6:32pm.

  • Cheryl

    6lb 13oz. Time 3.26pm.

  • Huw

Plenty of comments here but very few actual guesses! I’ll go for 7lb 7oz, born at 7.07. Don’t know why the 7s, just seems vaguely Biblical, somehow…

  • Huw

    7.07am!

  • flipperr

I just found this bit - I love a good guess!!

7lb8oz, 4.03am (sorry - in my experience babies are early risers - especially when they want to be born!).

Gloria - make the most of baby-free maternity leave - I wish I’d been out a bit more before my 1st arrived - cos after she was born it took at least an hour to leave the house!…..oh, as well as nappies and cream make sure you have muslins - lots of them!!

  • Andy

Well guessed everyone! The competition is hotting up now…

  • Big Iain

Annoyed Cheryl has gone low, was going to go for just under the lowest one that anyone else had said but instead have to say 7lb 4oz (which in my experience is a colossal baby) and 10.25 pm.

    Iain.

PS We came 12th in the National Inland Championships this weekend.

  • Andy

Nicely done Big Iain… is that what people call you or are you having a guess at the name of our child too? Also - welcome to all the Yardleys who have joined in. It’s lovely to have you all along.

  • Gloria

Iain - 7lb 4oz is only a colossal baby if you work on SCBU! You seem to be forgetting that this is a Yardley baby we’re talking about here e.g. I believe the largest of our siblings weighed 10lb 2oz at birth…

Also, congratulations on coming 12th. I assume that’s quite impressive or you wouldn’t have shared.

Flipperr - my mum says all babies are born in the middle of the night because “it’s safest”. Not sure if it’s true but thinking about it, all my friends babies have been born during the night, even the ones that came after an induction or emergency c-section, so you’re probably more likely to be right than me!

Also, who wins if one person gets the weight right but the time wrong and someone else gets the time right but the weight wrong?

  • Andy

The time was a back up in case anyone guessed the same weight I think - like if there is a tie break situation. Or if two people guessed 71b 98oz and another person guessed 7lb 96oz and the baby actually weighed 7lb 97oz… then we’d need a tie break.

  • Kate

Gloria - the rules are clearly stated in the original post.
I must get Ne to formally submit his guess.
Most babies are born in the middle of the night because they want to make midwives suffer.
    As does almost everyone else…

  • Gloria

    Sorry. I see that now.

I’m getting very impatient but feel like it’s a bit rude to, seeing as I haven’t actually reached my due date yet. At least my midwife is back from her holiday now. I know it’s not very likely that it’ll be her at the birth, but the chances were significantly reduced by her not actually being at work for the past 2 weeks…!

  • flipperr

My named midwife (who happened to be on duty that night) graced us with her presence around half an hour after my home birth with Z1PO. Fortunately the 1st one on duty made it about 3/4 hour before! No2 helped tidy up and had a cup of tea! She was called at about 5am, so I can understand her reluctance!

  • Jonny Evans

I put my money on Amazon being born at around 1pm on 15th June
